[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Jong-hwa] Global home furnishing company IKEA will participate as an official partner in the 'United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26)' held from the 31st of this month to the 12th of next month, taking the lead in global climate change response.
Since declaring itself a 'Climate Positive Company by 2030,' IKEA has been continuously growing its business while striving to reduce more greenhouse gas emissions than those emitted across its entire value chain. This effort is also a commitment to the Paris Agreement to keep the global temperature rise within 1.5℃.
By participating as a partner in this COP26, IKEA plans to strengthen its position as a sustainability leader and continue efforts to protect the healthy future of the Earth, a sanctuary for all. 'COP' refers to the 'Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change,' held annually since 1995, and this year's meeting in Glasgow, UK, is the 26th conference.
IKEA has invested in renewable energy such as wind turbines, solar power generation, and solar panel installation, producing renewable energy equivalent to 132% of the energy consumption in its business operations as of 2020. It plans to convert 100% of the energy used in IKEA stores and buildings worldwide to renewable energy by 2025. Additionally, to achieve zero carbon dioxide emissions during delivery by 2025, IKEA is expanding the introduction of electric vehicles in its furniture delivery service system.
Alok Sharma, Chair of COP26, said, "We are pleased to have IKEA as a partner in this COP26," adding, "We hope that all partners showing leadership in climate change response in their respective fields will cooperate to successfully hold COP26 to achieve carbon reduction goals."
