[Asia Economy Reporter Na Ye-eun] Shortly after the government announced measures to improve military meals, a revelation surfaced that an army unit in Gangwon Province used expired ingredients.
On the 19th, a tip titled "11th Division used ingredients 3 months past expiration date" was posted on the Facebook page 'Delivering Army Training Center News.'
The informant claimed, "On Tuesday the 19th, curry that was 3 months past its expiration date was served for lunch," and added, "Although our unit has supply officers (officers), they are assigned as supply supervisors without specialized knowledge and are operating indiscriminately."
They continued, "The officers are increasingly burdened with supply supervisor duties in addition to their regular work," and said, "This is not the first time expired ingredients have been used, and even though the unit commander was informed, it was dismissed as insignificant."
They also added, "The eggs served on the 11th looked obviously abnormal to anyone, so a report was made, but it was dismissed as a cooking issue."
The curry product in the photo provided by the informant clearly shows an expiration date of "Until 2021.07.10." The eggs also appeared abnormal, with spoiled shells and grayish contents.
In response, the 11th Division stated, "The eggs served were discovered during cooking on the evening of the 11th, and after the battalion commander confirmed on site, all were discarded. Tuna kimchi stir-fry was served as a replacement. On the 19th, expired curry was served for lunch but was identified during the meal, immediately discarded, and replaced with jjajang (black bean sauce). So far, five people consumed the curry, but no abnormal symptoms have been reported."
They added, "The division takes this matter seriously and will thoroughly investigate all aspects of meal service, including ingredient storage and management, and on-site supply supervision. We will carefully verify whether the issue arose during supply supervision or the cooking process and make improvements accordingly."
