Dongmyeong Unit Officer Early Repatriation on Assault Charges This Time
[Asia Economy Yang Nak-gyu, Military Specialist Reporter] A junior officer belonging to the Dongmyeong Unit deployed in Lebanon has been ordered to return early on charges of verbal abuse and physical assault.
According to the military on the 18th, the Joint Chiefs of Staff recently became aware of allegations that Sergeant A, belonging to the 25th rotation of the Dongmyeong Unit, committed physical assault and verbal abuse against subordinates and conducted an investigation. It is also reported that he is suspected of frequently making insulting remarks to lower-ranking soldiers and physically beating them.
The Joint Chiefs of Staff held a review on the overseas dispatch suitability of Mr. A and issued an early return order for Sergeant A, and plan to request disciplinary action from the Army as soon as Sergeant A returns.
In addition, around the same time, five other sergeants belonging to the 25th rotation of the Dongmyeong Unit were found to have secretly shared leftover alcohol and were subjected to an internal investigation by the unit on October 1, the Armed Forces Day. On that day, alcohol was served at a dinner with the commander’s approval, but these officers reportedly shared two cans of beer during unauthorized nighttime hours after the dinner. Regardless of the amount of alcohol consumed, concerns are rising that the misconduct of Dongmyeong Unit officers continues unabated, indicating serious discipline issues on site.
The unit had already faced unprecedented disciplinary actions in August when three officers, including the commander of the 25th rotation, were removed from their posts and ordered to return early due to allegations of drinking parties and embezzlement of public funds. At that time, the Ministry of National Defense Investigation Headquarters and the Joint Chiefs of Staff Inspection Office dispatched inspectors to Lebanon, and the unit commander was replaced.
However, with inappropriate conduct by officers confirmed again just over two months later, criticism is mounting that the Joint Chiefs of Staff’s supervision and response, which bear command responsibility for the deployed unit, may be lax.

The Dongmyeong Unit was dispatched to Lebanon in 2007 at the request of the United Nations and has been carrying out its mission for 15 years, making it the longest-serving overseas deployment unit of the Republic of Korea Armed Forces. The currently deployed 25th rotation has been on duty since April and is scheduled to be replaced around the end of the year.
