Opposition, Ahead of Lee Jae-myung's National Assembly Audit Attendance, Launches Full-Scale Daejang-dong Offensive: "Only Special Prosecutor Can Conduct Substantive Investigation"
[Asia Economy Reporter Oh Ju-yeon] On the 17th, one day before Lee Jae-myung, the presidential candidate of the Democratic Party of Korea (Governor of Gyeonggi Province), is scheduled to attend the National Assembly audit, the People Power Party launched an offensive against Lee regarding the preferential development allegations in the Daejang-dong case, stating that "only a special prosecutor can thoroughly investigate the truth of the Daejang-dong incident."
On this day, spokesperson Yang Jun-woo said in a statement, "The candidate himself confessed that he designed this (Daejang-dong) construction corruption project, and he personally signed at least 10 related official documents," adding, "It is surprising that he thinks blaming others will work when even his key aide Yoo Dong-gyu is currently detained on corruption charges related to shareholding suspicions."
He continued, "As long as he opposes the special prosecutor, there is no way to avoid suspicion that the designer, the candidate, was more deeply involved," and questioned, "Do you not see the public's command to 'investigate thoroughly regardless of left or right' and the high approval rate for the special prosecutor?" He emphasized, "Only a special prosecutor can thoroughly investigate the truth of this case."
Floor spokesperson Kang Min-guk also stated in a commentary, "The core of the Daejang-dong case investigation is who the 'final decision-maker' of this preferential structure is," and said, "During his tenure as mayor of Seongnam, the candidate personally signed at least 10 official documents related to the Daejang-dong development. From January 2014 to November 2016, he was detailedly briefed and approved everything from the planning of the Daejang-dong development to the decision on the business method and how to use the dividends."
He pointed out, "The focus of the Daejang-dong preferential corruption investigation inevitably centers on the candidate." He also criticized, "Seongnam City and Gyeonggi Province are not cooperating at all, submitting 'false documents' by omitting parts in response to the National Assembly's data submission requests for the national audit."

Spokesperson Kang added, "The prosecution's investigation into the Daejang-dong preferential corruption case has lost public trust to the extent that criticisms of 'incompetence, negligence, delay, and codependency' are insufficient," and said, "Only a special prosecutor, who secures political neutrality and independence, can guarantee an unrestrained investigation free from influence by the presidential election atmosphere."
