Honored with the Local Autonomy Development Award in the Basic Division by the Korea Institute for Local Autonomy Development... Leading Local Autonomy Progress by Sharing and Expanding 100% Eradication of Harmful Businesses to Other Local Governments
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] On the 5th, Park Gyeom-su, Mayor of Gangbuk-gu, received the Grand Prize in the Local Government category at the ‘2021 Korea Local Autonomy Development Awards’ hosted by the Korea Institute for Local Autonomy Development.
The ‘Korea Local Autonomy Development Awards’ comprehensively evaluate local governments that have contributed to local autonomy and regional development through policies, projects that sparked regional innovation in unique environments, and exemplary initiatives in local decentralization. Members of the National Assembly, local government heads, local council members, superintendents, public officials, and social organizations who contributed to these efforts are selected.
The district was recognized for achievements in various fields. To create a safe environment for youth, since 2015, it has promoted the nation’s first ‘Campaign to Eradicate Harmful Businesses Around Schools,’ successfully eliminating 100% of harmful businesses within six years.
Additionally, Gangbuk-gu established Seoul’s first high-quality resource circulation system that connects the collection and recycling of transparent PET bottles and vinyl as one integrated process. As a result, it has been evaluated as playing a leading role in regional innovation, spreading to other local governments.
Other exemplary cases include the nation’s first integrated COVID-19 screening clinic information system, hosting the April 19 Revolution National Cultural Festival, the Youth Hope Expedition in partnership with the Um Hong-gil Human Foundation, the Dream Tree Nurturing Scholarship Foundation that supports students’ talents until adulthood, and Gangbuk-gu’s unique educational project for a society free from prejudice and discrimination, the Multicultural Family Dreamdong-i Preparatory School.
