Seoul City to Hold Non-Face-to-Face 'Hunlyundogam' Traditional Martial Arts Reenactment Event on 2nd-3rd
Seoul City and Seoul Design Foundation to Host at DDP... Theme: 'Hanyangdoseong Meets Traditional Martial Arts!'
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] A dynamic festival of traditional martial arts will take place on the 2nd and 3rd against the backdrop of Hanyangdoseong, Seoul's representative cultural heritage and Historic Site No. 10.
According to Seoul City on the 1st, the city will showcase the martial arts practiced by the elite military unit, Hunryeondogam, which protected the capital Hanyang by repelling foreign invasions and internal rebellions, at this year's first reenactment event of Hunryeondogam martial arts. Visitors will have the vivid experience of the 24 practical combat techniques recorded in the Muye Dobo Tongji.
Hunryeondogam was a military camp established in 1593 following the fall of Hanyang just 20 days after the outbreak of the Imjin War in the late Joseon period. It was created to train soldiers using newly introduced weapons such as matchlock guns and updated tactics. The soldiers belonged to this unit were professional soldiers stationed in Hanyang and received salaries.
Muye Dobo Tongji is a standard martial arts manual compiled in 1790 (the 14th year of King Jeongjo) by Lee Deok-mu, Park Je-ga, Baek Dong-su, and others under royal command. It is a practical training manual that realistically depicts each movement of 24 combat techniques, including 18 forms of thrusting, slicing, and striking using various weapons such as long spears, dangpa (trident), deungpae (shield), and wol-do (crescent blade), as well as mounted martial arts. It holds great documentary value as it comprehensively organizes indigenous Joseon martial arts of the 18th century and East Asian martial arts introduced to Joseon through the Imjin War and the Manchu invasions.
