"From Tomorrow, Mobile Phone Call History Viewing Period Extended from 6 Months to 1 Year"
[Asia Economy Reporter Seolgina Jo] The Personal Information Protection Commission announced on the 30th that starting from October 1, the period for viewing one's mobile phone call records will be extended from the existing 6 months to 1 year.
This is the result of the Personal Information Protection Commission's recommendation to improve terms of use, which was resolved on December 23 last year and accepted by the three major telecommunications companies, 48 mobile carriers including MVNO operators.
Until now, telecom companies have stored communication fact confirmation data such as call records and base station connection information for 12 months for purposes such as investigation and security under the Telecommunications Privacy Protection Act, while limiting the period for requesting call record viewing to 6 months in their terms of use.
Accordingly, the Personal Information Protection Commission recommended improving the terms to extend the viewing period to 1 year to effectively guarantee the data subject's right to access personal information.
The telecom companies will expand the viewing period starting from the 1st of next month after making necessary preparations such as changing the terms of use and system adjustments. From now on, citizens will be able to view communication fact confirmation data such as call records stored by telecom companies for 12 months for the same period.
Users who wish to view their own mobile phone call records can apply through the website of their subscribed telecom company, customer centers, or directly managed agencies. On the website, call records can be viewed immediately after identity verification, and by calling customer centers or visiting directly managed agencies, users can receive call records via fax, registered mail, or email.
