First in Domestic Duty-Free Industry to Digitize Duty-Free Product Exchange Vouchers
Smart Receipts Issued at All Domestic Stores Starting the 14th
"Can Replace One Million Paper Receipts Annually"
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Yuri] Lotte Duty Free announced on the 15th that it will introduce a smart receipt issuance service for the first time in the domestic duty-free industry. The strategy aims to practice ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) values and enhance customer convenience by utilizing digital technology.
Smart receipts are electronic receipts that can be received via mobile or other smart devices instead of paper receipts used in stores. Paper receipts use special thermal paper coated with chemicals, making recycling difficult and raising ongoing concerns about resource waste and environmental hormones. Until now, the domestic duty-free industry has partially used smart receipts as a supplementary means for verifying purchase history, but Lotte Duty Free is the first to digitize even duty-free product exchange vouchers. With the establishment of this smart receipt system, Lotte Duty Free expects to reduce the waste of about one million paper receipts annually.
Lotte Duty Free members will automatically receive smart receipts through the Lotte Internet Duty Free website or mobile application (app) when purchasing products. Previously, customers had to keep paper receipts, which were easy to lose, for product exchanges or refunds, but now they can check their purchase history with smart receipts. Exchange vouchers required for duty-free product delivery at airports will also be replaced by smart receipts. For customers unfamiliar with smart devices or those who need paper receipts, additional paper receipts can still be issued at the store during product payment.
Smart receipts can be checked after logging into Lotte Internet Duty Free under 'My Lotte - Smart Receipt' and are stored for four years from the time of purchase. Lotte Duty Free operates its internet duty-free store in six languages: Korean, English, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), Japanese, and Vietnamese, ensuring global customers can use the smart receipt issuance service without inconvenience. After implementing the smart receipt service at all domestic stores, Lotte Duty Free plans to expand it to overseas locations.
Last year, Lotte Duty Free introduced electronic shelf labels (ESL) for the first time at its Myeongdong flagship smart store and recently expanded them to six domestic stores. The previously used price tags were disposable items that had to be manually replaced whenever product specifications or prices changed. In contrast, ESLs update product information in real-time through a network system without separate replacement work, reducing resource waste and improving employee work efficiency. ESLs operate on batteries and have a semi-permanent lifespan. Lotte Duty Free plans to create a digital duty-free environment where customers can shop conveniently from product information search to self-checkout using ESLs.
Lee Gap, CEO of Lotte Duty Free, said, "We will continuously identify and improve any unnecessary waste occurring throughout the entire shopping process at Lotte Duty Free. We will actively incorporate the latest digital technologies to protect the environment and enhance customer shopping convenience."

Meanwhile, in March, Lotte Duty Free established the industry's first 'ESG Value Pursuit Committee' and is conducting various activities for sustainable growth. They have introduced solar power facilities at the integrated logistics center and plan to convert all 1-ton bonded transport vehicles to electric vehicles by next year. The company is expanding the introduction of shopping bags made from biodegradable materials and changing printed materials such as store leaflets and event banners to eco-friendly materials made from sugarcane by-products.
