China Opposes Reports of US Efforts to Rename 'Taiwan Representative Office'
"Must Uphold the One China Principle"
[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo Je-hoon] China has protested as the United States considers using the name 'Taiwan' for the Taiwan Representative Office in Washington.
Zhao Lijian, spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated at a regular briefing on the 13th, "The Taiwan issue is the most sensitive core issue in China-US relations," adding, "China has already lodged a stern negotiation with the United States regarding the reports from related media."
Earlier, the British Financial Times (FT) reported that the United States is considering changing the name of the Taiwan Representative Office from 'Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office' to 'Taiwan Representative Office.' Due to China's adherence to the 'One China' principle, most countries currently refer to Taiwan Representative Offices as 'Taipei Representative Offices.'
