Seoul Autonomous Police Committee - Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, Full Effort to Reduce Traffic Fatalities "Goal: Decrease by 100 People"
Special Measures to Reduce Traffic Fatalities: Intensive Crackdown for One Month Starting from the 13th
Enhanced Patrols at Pedestrian and Two-Wheeler Traffic Hotspots, Focused Enforcement on Drunk Driving, Signal Violations, and Speeding
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The Seoul Metropolitan Autonomous Police Committee will conduct intensive patrols and crackdowns with the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency from the 13th to October 10th for one month to reduce the increasing number of recent traffic fatal accidents. Traffic accident prevention activities, such as inspection and reinforcement of traffic facilities, will also be promoted.
The number of traffic accident fatalities in Seoul showed a decreasing trend until the second quarter, but since July, it has been increasing due to rainy road accidents, holiday season traffic accidents, and the spread of delivery culture caused by COVID-19, as well as traffic violations by two-wheeled vehicles (motorcycles).
On the 12th, the Seoul Autonomous Police strengthened patrols and crackdowns around crosswalks with heavy pedestrian and two-wheeled vehicle traffic and launched intensive crackdowns to eradicate traffic violations such as drunk driving, signal violations, and crossing the center line. Patrol duties will be strengthened in areas with frequent fatal accidents and vulnerable time periods, and crackdowns will be enforced on accident-inducing behaviors such as jaywalking and intoxicated persons lying on the road.
In particular, to eradicate fatal accidents involving vulnerable road users such as children and the elderly, patrols will be strengthened in areas with frequent traffic accidents, and preventive activities such as strict crackdowns on traffic violations around schools will be enhanced. Additionally, traffic safety facilities installed at crosswalks and roads will be inspected and reinforced.
The Seoul Metropolitan Autonomous Police Committee, together with the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, has formed a “Traffic Accident Reduction Task Force (TF)” involving specialized organizations to improve traffic safety systems and discover and promote immediately implementable safety measures and traffic safety policies by each institution. The Traffic Accident Reduction Task Force discusses feasible policies for each institution based on recent traffic accident statistics and in-depth cause analyses in Seoul provided by the National Police Agency and others. Participants in the TF include the Seoul Metropolitan Government’s Urban Transportation Office, the National Police Agency, the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, the Road Traffic Authority, and the Korea Transportation Safety Authority.
Furthermore, placards containing messages about “Compliance with Traffic Regulations” will be posted in places with heavy foot traffic such as large supermarkets and bus stops, and various video media such as outdoor electronic billboards and subway monitors will be used to raise awareness of traffic safety and encourage participation.
