Yongin City to Provide 'Farmer Basic Income' Starting Next Year
[Asia Economy (Yongin) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Yongin City in Gyeonggi Province will start providing a basic income for farmers from January next year.
Yongin City announced on the 10th that it has enacted the "Basic Income Support Ordinance for Farmers" to guarantee the basic rights of farmers and promote the public functions of agriculture.
The basic income for farmers is an annual payment of 600,000 KRW in local currency given to individual farmers through cooperation between Gyeonggi Province and city/counties. If not used within 3 months, it will expire. The funding is shared equally, 50% each by Gyeonggi Province and the city/counties.
The Yongin City ordinance includes provisions allowing the mayor to separately determine the payment cycle and amount within the city budget, and to establish a Basic Income for Farmers Committee to ensure smooth operation.
Yongin City plans to secure the related budget and start accepting applications from local farmers and making payments from January next year.
