Philippine Duterte to Run as Ruling Party Candidate in Next Year's Vice Presidential Election
[Asia Economy Reporter Yuri Kim] Rodrigo Duterte, the President of the Philippines, will run as the ruling party's vice-presidential candidate in the presidential and vice-presidential elections next May.
The ruling party of the Philippines, 'PDP Laban,' held a party convention on the 8th (local time) and nominated Duterte as the vice-presidential candidate for next year, according to major foreign media reports.
However, Christopher Go, a senator and close aide to Duterte, declined the nomination for presidential candidate. After being nominated as a presidential candidate, Senator Go stated, "To continue the change, we need to find someone who carries the weight comparable to President Duterte," expressing his intention not to run.
Accordingly, foreign media reported that it is uncertain whether PDP Laban will be able to field a candidate before the presidential candidate registration deadline next month.
Another presidential candidate mentioned is Senator Panfilo Lacson, who announced his intention to run for president that morning. However, Senator Lacson is trailing in the lower ranks in opinion polls.
Sara Duterte, the mayor of Davao and daughter of President Duterte, is also emerging as a potential presidential candidate. Mayor Sara has frequently expressed her intention to run for president but belongs to a different party.
