Announcing the Global Commitment to Hosting the 28th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP28) in Yeosu
[Yeosu=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Sim Kyung-taek] Yeosu, Jeonnam, the central city of the South Coast Southern Central Region bidding for COP28, announced its commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 to the world on the 8th by simultaneously participating in the ‘Race To Zero’ campaign and the ‘Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy (GCoM).’
Yeosu City joined the ‘Race To Zero’ campaign for achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, which started with Dangjin City on the 6th, and also became a member of the ‘Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy (GCoM),’ which includes over 10,000 local governments worldwide.
Accordingly, Yeosu City will register its greenhouse gas reduction projects and emissions on the global local government climate action online platform (CDP) to realize carbon neutrality. In addition, through various projects to reduce greenhouse gases and the Carbon Zero citizen practice movement, Yeosu plans to take a significant step toward hosting the UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP28) in the South Coast Southern Central Region.
Yeosu City designated Gwangju Metropolitan City and Gangdong-gu, Seoul as the next cities to participate in the relay online campaign for leading cities responding to climate change.
‘Race To Zero (RtZ)’ is a campaign led by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) that accelerates the transition to a decarbonized society by involving various actors such as local governments, companies, and academia worldwide to establish and implement plans for carbon neutrality by 2050 and greenhouse gas reduction by 2030.
Currently, 764 local governments including London, UK, and Washington DC, USA, over 3,000 companies, more than 200 investors, and about 600 universities are participating. In Korea, seven local governments including Jeonnam, Seoul, Busan, and Daegu, which are four metropolitan local governments, are participating.
The ‘Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy (GCoM)’ is the world’s largest joint climate action by local governments addressing climate change and energy transition. Currently, over 10,000 cities from 138 countries worldwide participate, and in Korea, a total of 15 local governments including Jeonnam, Seoul, Daegu, three metropolitan local governments, and 12 basic local governments such as Suwon and Changwon are participating.
