[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] The Ministry of Education and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education Yoo Eun-hye announced that they will request an investigation into former Dongyang University President Choi Seong-hae on charges of spreading false information and file a lawsuit for defamation.
At a regular briefing on the 6th, a Ministry of Education official stated, "Former President Choi is spreading false information regarding the Ministry of Education's investigation and summary dismissal in October 2019," adding, "We are pursuing lawsuits related to defamation and spreading false information against former President Choi, requesting a police investigation, and Deputy Prime Minister Yoo will also file an individual lawsuit."
On the 30th of last month, the YouTube channel 'Yeollin Gonggam TV' released a recording of a phone conversation between former President Choi and an associate. Former President Choi claimed, "Deputy Prime Minister Yoo Eun-hye stopped Ministry of Education staff from investigating various issues, including allegations of my academic credential forgery."
Former President Choi also claimed, "When the Ministry of Education was investigating false academic credentials, Deputy Prime Minister Yoo kept the audit documents in her drawer, but the Blue House intervened, which led to my resignation."
In response, a Ministry of Education official rebutted, "The Ministry of Education performed its duties properly as an independent department, and all of former President Choi's claims are untrue."
Former President Choi was the president of Dongyang University when allegations of forged certificates surfaced regarding Cho Min, daughter of former Minister of Justice Cho Kuk, and he stated that he never awarded certificates in his name to Cho Kuk’s children.

After making statements supporting allegations of admission fraud involving the Cho Kuk family, former President Choi was embroiled in allegations of false academic credentials concerning his bachelor's degree from Dankook University and his doctoral degree from the United States. It was revealed that former President Choi omitted the appointment approval application documents when he was appointed as a director, leading the Ministry of Education to demand his dismissal. Former President Choi resigned last year.
