Chevrolet Colorado's Sales Soar 600% with 'Reverse Run' Trend
Due to COVID-19, Pickup Truck Demand Soars... Surpassing Competing Imported Models and Reversing Trends
[Asia Economy Reporter Yu Je-hoon] The Chevrolet Colorado has succeeded in reversing the trend in the imported pickup truck market.
According to Korea GM on the 4th, a total of 689 Chevrolet Colorado units were sold in August alone. This represents a 617.7% increase compared to the same period last year, setting a new record for the highest monthly sales this year.
During the same period, according to the Korea Automobile Importers & Distributors Association (KAIDA), 661 Chevrolet Colorado units were sold last month, ranking it as the third best-selling car behind the Mercedes-Benz E250 (1,586 units) and Volkswagen Tiguan 2.0 TDI (820 units).
The Chevrolet Colorado's reversal of fortune aligns with the growth of the pickup truck market. Since COVID-19, demand for auto camping, such as car camping, has increased, leading to a gradual growth trend in the pickup truck market.
In fact, SsangYong Motor's The New Rexton Sports & Khan, a representative domestic pickup truck, sold about 15,000 units this year despite various setbacks including production suspension, and there are about 4,000 units still awaiting delivery.
There are also not many competing models. Although the Ford Ranger and Jeep Gladiator were launched, their cumulative sales from January to July this year remained at 605 and 506 units, respectively. Korea GM explained, "The Chevrolet Colorado is a traditional pickup truck model composed of a high-strength full box frame body, delivering excellent driving performance both on-road and off-road through an advanced four-wheel-drive system," adding, "Last month, it also surpassed competing imported cars to take first place."
