Gyeonggi Province "Welcomes Passage of Private School Act Amendment"
[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Gyeonggi Province has issued a statement welcoming the passage of the 'Private School Act Amendment' in the National Assembly, which was prepared to eradicate corruption in private school hiring.
On the 3rd, Gyeonggi Province stated in the announcement, "This amendment mandates a written exam managed by the city/provincial superintendent of education when private schools hire new teachers," and added, "We believe this legislation is meaningful as it is necessary for fair and transparent teacher selection."
Earlier, in February of this year, Gyeonggi Province formed a 'tripartite policy consultative body' with the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education and the Gyeonggi Provincial Council to promote the enactment of the 'Private School Personnel Recruitment Support Ordinance' and proposed amendments to the 'Private School Act' to the central government and National Assembly, making efforts for fair hiring in private schools.
In March, Gyeonggi Province, in cooperation with the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education and the Gyeonggi Provincial Council, signed the 'Gyeonggi Province Private School Fair Recruitment Promotion Business Agreement,' which includes measures to prioritize financial support for private schools that reflect fair recruitment in their evaluation indicators, thereby encouraging voluntary entrusted recruitment by private schools.
The province emphasized, "Corruption in private school hiring fundamentally undermines trust in education and damages the quality of education," and added, "We hope that this amendment to the Private School Act will establish the recognition that private schools, as recipients of public funds, must also bear corresponding social responsibilities."

Earlier, Governor Lee Jae-myung highly praised the amendment on the 29th of last month when the Private School Act amendment passed the National Assembly standing committee, saying, "This amendment entrusts the first written exam to the Office of Education to prevent corruption in private school hiring," and added, "Compared to Gyeonggi Province’s initiative to entrust the entire fair recruitment process, this is only a small step forward, but it is the result of courageous efforts by Democratic Party members of the Education Committee who pushed through despite numerous resistances."
