Goheung-gun, 1st 'Marianne·Margaret Volunteer Award' Ceremony

[Goheung=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Hyung-kwon] On the 2nd, Goheung-gun, Jeollanam-do (Governor Song Gwi-geun) held the 1st ‘Marianne and Margaret Volunteer Award’ ceremony at the Kim Yeon-su Room of the Goheung Cultural Center.
The ceremony, held with attendance limited to fewer than 50 people in accordance with COVID-19 prevention measures and social distancing level 3, was attended by the awardees, Goheung-gun Governor Song Gwi-geun, Song Young-hyun, Chairman of the Goheung County Council and council members, Kim Jeong-hee, Superintendent of Goheung Office of Education, principals of local middle and high schools, and members of local volunteer organizations. Meanwhile, Jeollanam-do Province, the Korean Nurses Association, Jeonnam Nurses Society, and 22 volunteer centers nationwide participated online.
The nursing award recipient, Kang Sun-hwa, President of the Overseas Korean Nurses Association, said, “Receiving the Marianne and Margaret Volunteer Award is an honor and a reward, and I will take better care of the hardships and health of overseas Koreans and Asians living away from their homeland.”
The volunteer award recipient, Park Hee-sung, President of the Sarang Nanum Volunteer Association, said, “I will continue warm sharing by inheriting the spirit of sharing and service of Marianne and Margaret,” and expressed the intention to use the prize money for the Marianne and Margaret memorial projects and support for underprivileged schools.
Goheung-gun Governor Song Gwi-geun said, “The volunteer award named after Marianne and Margaret will serve as a milestone to re-examine the lives of Marianne and Margaret, who demonstrated a noble humanity that transcends disease and race, and to reflect on the value of service and dedication.”

Meanwhile, the ‘Marianne and Margaret Volunteer Award,’ inaugurated this year, was established to discover volunteers who inherit the noble spirit of Marianne and Margaret, who served Hansen’s patients for over 43 years on Sorokdo Island in Goheung, following their Nobel Peace Prize nomination, and to contribute to spreading a sense of community living together. Candidates were recommended nationwide in the nursing and volunteer categories, and one person from each category was selected to receive a certificate and a prize of 10 million KRW.
