Intergovernmental 'Regional Balanced New Deal Support Council' Formed to Expand Korean New Deal Locally
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The Ministry of the Interior and Safety and the Regional Balanced New Deal Support Council held the 1st Regional Balanced New Deal Joint Meeting on the 2nd at the Government Seoul Office and Sejong Office. The Ministry of the Interior and Safety allocated 13.1 trillion won in the government budget proposal for next year.
The 'Regional Balanced New Deal Support Council' was launched to mark the announcement of Korean New Deal 2.0 and the first anniversary of the Regional Balanced New Deal. The council members include the Vice Minister of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, the chairman of the National Policy Task Council, vice ministers of related ministries, and secretaries from the Blue House. The council supports expert consulting to help local governments and resident communities discover, plan, and concretize resident participation projects, projects tailored to regional characteristics, and multi-ministerial cooperative projects.
In the first session, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety announced the 'Plan to Revitalize the Regional Balanced New Deal Led by Resident Communities and Local Government Collaboration.' A bottom-up regional balanced New Deal project will be solicited in which resident communities of the relevant region participate in all processes of the regional balanced New Deal project. Based on the 'Community Revitalization Plan' established by resident communities such as resident autonomy committees, comprehensive support will also be provided for multi-ministerial New Deal projects. Additionally, regional balanced New Deal projects in the digital and green sectors that transcend local government boundaries will be discovered and supported.
In the second session, the current status of national budget reflection for the regional balanced New Deal in the 2022 government budget proposal announced this time and future plans were discussed. The 2022 government budget proposal announced this time confirmed the financial investment scale for the regional balanced New Deal at 13.1 trillion won, an increase of 27.5% (2.9 trillion won) compared to the New Deal 1.0 plan (10.2 trillion won).
K-New Deal Committee Regional Balanced New Deal Subcommittee Chairman Assemblyman Kang Hoon-sik said, "The regional balanced New Deal projects confirmed in this government budget proposal will act as a catalyst for regional growth," and added, "At the K-New Deal Committee level, we will also support ensuring that the total budget scale for the regional balanced New Deal is not reduced during the budget National Assembly."

Minister Jeon Hae-cheol said, "It is important to expand the Korean New Deal and financially support creative New Deal projects in regions so that local governments can proactively promote the regional balanced New Deal," and added, "We will strengthen customized support so that the regional balanced New Deal projects reflected in the 2022 government budget proposal can serve as a foundation for balanced development and various future growth engines can take root in the regions."
