Geochang 'Mureung-ri Burial Mounds' Designated as Gyeongnam Province Monument
The Largest Gaya Burial Mound Cluster in Geochang Area with 86 Bongtobun Tombs
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Soon-kyung] On the 1st, Geochang-gun, Gyeongnam announced that the Geochang Namha-myeon Mureung-ri Tumuli Cluster has been designated as Gyeongsangnam-do Monument No. 304.
The Geochang Mureung-ri Tumuli Cluster consists of 86 burial mounds, including large and medium-sized mounds, arranged along the ridgeline in the Mureung-ri area of Namha-myeon.
Most of the excavated pottery follows the Daegaya style but incorporates characteristics unique to the Geochang region.
It is the largest confirmed Gaya tumuli cluster in the Geochang area to date, with 34 mounds in District I and 52 mounds in District II. Located at a strategic point allowing movement between Baekje and Silla, it is academically important as it helps understand the cultural aspects of the border region during the Three Kingdoms period.
Starting with a surface survey in 1997, followed by detailed surveys and three excavation investigations, unique artifacts of the Geochang region’s style have been identified. The site is recognized as an important relic that reveals the construction patterns, characteristics, and period of large burial mounds from the 5th to 6th centuries in Geochang, leading to its designation as a provincial monument.
