Jung Sye-kyun Announces Pledge to Provide 1 Million Won Monthly Child Allowance Until 60 Months of Age
[Asia Economy Reporter Jeon Jinyoung] Jeong Se-gyun, a ruling party presidential candidate and former Prime Minister, announced a pledge on the 1st to provide a monthly child allowance of 1 million won until the child reaches 60 months of age.
On the morning of the same day, Jeong held a non-face-to-face press conference and said, “The low birthrate and aging population issue has now become an important agenda leading to national extinction beyond population decline. It is time for drastic measures,” proposing seven policies.
Regarding the child allowance payment, he stated, “We will consolidate scattered indirect support and expand the child allowance to provide direct support of 1 million won per month.”
He also said he would raise the limit of the National Happiness Card, which can be used for pregnancy and childbirth medical expenses and social service projects, from 600,000 won to 2 million won. Jeong emphasized, “We will strengthen health insurance coverage for mothers from pregnancy to childbirth and postpartum, and promote recognition of indemnity insurance for postpartum complications. Through this, the state will take responsibility for the health of mothers and fetuses.”
He pledged to abolish the current Low Birthrate and Aging Society Committee and establish the Ministry of Youth Future, which integrates the scattered youth policy functions.
To solve old-age poverty, he said, “I have already proposed the era of 1 million won in national pension,” adding, “In addition, we will extend the retirement age and align it with the national pension receiving age to eliminate periods without income.” He also pledged to reduce corporate burdens by converting corporate wage systems to job-based pay.
