Gangnam-gu Mayor Jeong Soon-gyun Opposes Land Swap Between Songhyeon-dong Site and Seoul Medical Center Site
"‘First Withdraw Plan to Supply 3,000 Units, Then Consider Land Swap for Songhyeon-dong Site’... Mayor Oh Se-hoon Requests Meeting"
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Jung Soon-gyun, Mayor of Gangnam-gu, stated on the 31st, “The Seoul Metropolitan Government’s announcement to additionally supply apartment housing on the southern site of the former Seoul Medical Center in Samseong-dong, while the issue of the ‘public housing supply plan for 3,000 units’ on the northern site remains unresolved, does not align with the purpose of the International Exchange Complex District Unit Plan nor with the future development of Gangnam,” expressing his opposition.
Mayor Jung asserted, “The district unit plan previously established by the Seoul Metropolitan Government prohibited the construction of apartment housing,” and added, “For securing competitiveness in the MICE industry as presented in the comprehensive development plan for the COEX and Jamsil Sports Complex area, development should proceed according to the original plan.”
He also said, “The Seoul Metropolitan Government’s announcement, as if Gangnam-gu had agreed, is a self-serving interpretation,” and requested a meeting with Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon, stating, “The 3,000-unit supply plan must first be withdrawn before discussing a land swap with the Songhyeon-dong site in Jongno-gu.”
In September 2016, Seoul announced through the International Exchange Complex District Unit Plan that the Seoul Medical Center site would be developed as an international exchange hub. However, in December 2018, the plan was reversed to build 800 public housing units, and last year, with the August 4th measures, the number was significantly increased to 3,000 units. Furthermore, on the 26th, Seoul announced its position to swap the southern site of the Seoul Medical Center with the Korean Air site in Songhyeon-dong, Jongno-gu, and to additionally develop apartment housing.

In a meeting with Mayor Oh in June, Mayor Jung demanded a full withdrawal of the 3,000-unit public housing supply plan, stating, “To secure competitiveness in the MICE industry, the original plan of GBC-Yeongdong-daero complex development must be pursued.”
