Ruling and Opposition Parties Reach Final Agreement to Pass 'Media Arbitration Act' at National Assembly Plenary Session on 27th Next Month (Comprehensive)
[Asia Economy Reporters Oh Ju-yeon, Park Jun-i, Jeon Jin-young] The Democratic Party of Korea and the People Power Party reached a final agreement on the 31st to process the amendment to the Media Arbitration Act at the National Assembly plenary session on the 27th of next month.
On the day, Yoon Ho-jung, floor leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, and Kim Ki-hyun, floor leader of the People Power Party, held a meeting at 1 p.m. presided over by National Assembly Speaker Park Byeong-seok, where they announced and signed an agreement including ▲ the formation of a separate consultative body related to the Media Arbitration Act ▲ activities of the consultative body until September 26 ▲ submission and processing of the Media Arbitration Act at the National Assembly plenary session on September 27.
At the meeting, Floor Leader Yoon Ho-jung said, "Today's agreement is significant in that both parties agreed to open a path to rescue the people harmed by fake news."
According to the agreement between the two parties on the day, the consultative body for the Media Arbitration Act will be composed of a total of eight members, including two lawmakers from each party and two experts.

Floor Leader Yoon said, "Although the processing of the Media Arbitration Act has been delayed by just over a month, both parties will do their best to create smooth discussions and meeting times through the consultative body," emphasizing, "The fake news damage relief law is not the end but the beginning of media reform."
Although the handling of the Media Arbitration Act has been passed to the September National Assembly following the agreement between the floor leaders of both parties, there is a high possibility that both sides will continue tense confrontations regarding the formation of the consultative body and discussions on contentious bills.
On the day, Floor Leader Kim Ki-hyun said, "There was a huge difference in opinions between the ruling and opposition parties, so it took a lot of time and effort to reach a compromise," adding, "Although we have bought about a month by postponing, the problem has not yet been resolved and remains ongoing."
He continued, "We need to deliberate over the remaining month on how to establish standards by which the media can conduct free reporting activities and be recognized by the public."
