The Ministry announced on the 31st that it will additionally select public health scholarship students for 2021 starting from the 1st of next month. Currently, the Ministry is providing scholarships this year to 10 medical students (including medical graduate students) and 21 nursing students. In the second half of the year, it plans to additionally select 10 medical students (including medical graduate students) as public health scholarship students, with each selected student receiving a scholarship of 10.2 million KRW per semester.
Any enrolled student in a medical school or medical graduate school can apply, and the application period is from the 1st to the 15th of next month. The eligible metropolitan autonomous regions for support are a total of seven areas: Gyeonggi, Gangwon, Chungnam, Chungbuk, Gyeongnam, Gyeongbuk, and Jeonbuk.
If selected as a public health scholarship student, the scholarship is provided on the condition of mandatory service at a regional public health medical institution for the period supported by the scholarship after graduation (minimum 2 years to maximum 5 years). If the scholarship benefit period is one year, the public hospital service period is calculated as two years.
Medical and medical graduate students wishing to apply for the public health scholarship should submit the application form, study plan, transcript, and high school graduation certificate to their school's administrative office within the application period. When filling out the application, applicants must select the region where they wish to perform mandatory service after graduation from among the seven regions: Gyeonggi, Gangwon, Chungnam, Chungbuk, Gyeongnam, Gyeongbuk, and Jeonbuk.
Afterwards, the school attaches a recommendation letter from the dean of the medical school or medical graduate school and a recommendation reason letter for each student and submits them to each city/province. Then, the city/province submits the related documents to the Ministry of Health and Welfare, which finally selects scholarship students through document screening and interviews by the selection committee.
Detailed information regarding the selection can be obtained through the Ministry’s Public Healthcare Division and the National Medical Center Public Health Medical Support Center. Additionally, related information can be confirmed through an online briefing session held via Zoom from the 6th to the 11th of next month.
