International Amnesty "Deadline for Evacuation Must Be Extended to Protect Afghan People"
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Gwan-joo] Amnesty International on the 30th urged the Taliban and the international community to extend the evacuation deadline scheduled for the 31st of this month to protect the Afghan people who are at high risk of retaliation by the Taliban.
U.S. President Joe Biden has stated that despite international calls to delay the withdrawal, all U.S. troops will withdraw by the 31st. Meanwhile, reports of human rights violations within Afghanistan are increasing, and concerns about human rights abuses by the Taliban regime are intensifying, according to Amnesty International.
According to Amnesty International's on-site investigation, last month in the Ghazni region, nine Hazara men were tortured and killed by the Taliban. Six men were executed by gunfire, and three died from torture. Additionally, the Taliban kidnapped, tortured, and killed popular comedian Nazar Mohammad, and on the 25th in Kabul, reports emerged that the Taliban were searching for human rights defenders and journalists, Amnesty International reported.
Agnes Callamard, Secretary General of Amnesty International, emphasized, "All efforts must be made to ensure that those who must leave Afghanistan due to fear of Taliban retaliation can evacuate safely," and added, "The international community must extend the evacuation deadline and guarantee that those wishing to leave Afghanistan can do so safely."
Furthermore, Amnesty International called for the urgent establishment of an independent UN mechanism authorized to document, collect, and preserve evidence of international crimes and human rights violations occurring in Afghanistan.
