View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Kang Hee-jong] On the 29th (local time), the United States conducted a military operation targeting the extremist armed group Islamic State (IS) near Kabul Airport, the capital of Afghanistan, according to US media outlets including CBS citing officials.
CBS reported, citing US Department of Defense officials, that the US carried out an airstrike on IS-K (Khorasan) vehicles near Kabul Airport that day. The suspects were reportedly moving toward Kabul Airport carrying suicide bombs.
This retaliatory attack by the US against IS-K is the second since the group carried out a suicide bombing at the airport near Kabul. IS-K is an armed group claiming to be a branch of IS in Afghanistan.
A US Department of Defense official stated, "This airstrike was conducted by an unmanned aerial vehicle (drone), and the US is confident that the target was hit." The initial report indicated no civilian casualties. The vehicle at the time of the airstrike was carrying a significant amount of explosives, which caused a secondary explosion. The official explained that three suspects were in the vehicle at the time of the explosion.
However, on the same day, the Associated Press reported that a rocket fell in a civilian area northwest of Kabul Airport, killing one child. It remains unclear whether the US airstrike on terror suspects and the civilian rocket attack are related to the same incident.
The US conducted a retaliatory drone strike in response to the Kabul Airport bombing that killed 170 people, including 13 US soldiers, the previous day, and announced that two high-ranking IS-K members were eliminated.
