Earlier, Gyeonggi Province, in collaboration with the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education?the first among local governments nationwide?decided to apply the same hiring standards used for public school teachers to prevent private school foundations from accepting bribes during new teacher recruitment, and plans to implement this starting next year.
On the 29th, Governor Lee stated on Facebook, "As expected, the People Power Party has started to obstruct the revision of the Private School Act in the National Assembly," and lamented, "It is clearly revealed at the crossroads where interests are involved who they represent and for whom the party exists."
He continued, "You may recall that when President Roh Moo-hyun persistently pushed for private school reform, then-leader Park Geun-hye and the Grand National Party staged large-scale outdoor protests," criticizing, "More than a decade has passed, but the familiar solidarity remains strong."
He then praised, "The recently passed Private School Act amendment in the National Assembly's standing committee includes entrusting the first written exam to the Office of Education to prevent hiring corruption in private schools. Compared to Gyeonggi Province's initiative to entrust the entire fair hiring process for private schools, this is only a small step forward, but it is the result of courageous efforts by Democratic Party members of the Education Committee who overcame numerous resistances."
