[Asia Economy Reporter Han Seung-gon] "It's a thorough display of self-promotion, with no remorse at all."
This is an expert opinion regarding serial killer Kang Ho-soon, who is incarcerated at Seoul Detention Center, claiming that he was unjustly punished within the detention center. The Ministry of Justice stated that Kang’s claims are completely unfounded.
The issue is why Kang Ho-soon, who committed brutal crimes, shows no remorse and continues such behavior. Previously, Yoo Young-chul, who was sentenced to death in July 2004 for murdering 21 people including women and intellectually disabled individuals, also mentioned the true culprit of the 'Gyeonggi Southern Serial Murder Case,' known as the worst long-unsolved case, in a media interview.
Experts pointed out that those who committed unforgivable horrific crimes and should be spending time reflecting instead continue to communicate and make claims externally, which is a form of self-promotion driven by feelings of superiority.
According to the Ministry of Justice on the 26th, Kang Ho-soon recently sent letters to the Minister of Justice and some media outlets claiming that when he requested information disclosure about the handling of an incident within the detention center, a correctional officer threatened him. He also claimed that he is being investigated and detained due to false accusations by staff.
Kang also alleged in his letter that Cho Ju-bin, the operator of the 'Doctor’s Room' who was sentenced to 42 years in prison in the second trial for producing and distributing sexual exploitation material in a Telegram chatroom, suffered human rights violations.
The Ministry of Justice refuted these claims as baseless. A Ministry of Justice official explained, "It is true that Kang received a 20-day solitary confinement (a measure involving isolation and temporary restriction of visits and correspondence) for disciplinary violations, but it was unrelated to false accusations," adding, "The solitary confinement punishment is currently suspended for two months."

Although Yoo Young-chul did not actively send letters to the outside to explain his situation like Kang Ho-soon, he too cannot avoid criticism for discussing other criminals’ methods as if he were a profiler rather than showing remorse for his own crimes.
Experts analyzed that attempts by criminals like Kang Ho-soon and Yoo Young-chul to communicate with the outside world are not acts of remorse but rather a form of display.
Oh Yoon-sung, a professor in the Department of Police Administration at Soonchunhyang University, said, "Nowadays, people are not very familiar with Kang Ho-soon," adding, "From that perspective, he might be bored inside prison and could be doing such things just for fun." He continued, "If you look at it from the viewpoint of whether he is remorseful, he is not at all," and pointed out, "It is a thorough self-promotion." He also analyzed, "Such behavior can give him a sense of superiority."
