The Central Disease Control Headquarters announced that the number of new COVID-19 cases in South Korea increased by 1,793 as of midnight on the 28th, bringing the total to 246,951. This is 48 fewer cases than the previous day (1,841). The daily number of confirmed cases has remained in the four-digit range for 53 consecutive days since the 7th of last month (1,211 cases).
Looking at the infection routes of the new confirmed cases on this day, 1,738 were locally transmitted and 55 were imported from overseas. By region, Seoul reported 559 cases, Gyeonggi 532, and Incheon 91, totaling 1,182 cases (68.0%) in the metropolitan area. Non-metropolitan areas reported a total of 556 cases (32.0%), including Daegu 76, Busan 75, Chungnam 61, Gyeongnam 52, Daejeon 48, Gyeongbuk 46, Chungbuk 44, Gangwon 39, Jeonnam 24, Ulsan and Jeonbuk 21 each, Jeju 19, Gwangju 18, and Sejong 12.
The number of imported cases was 55, an increase of 25 from the previous day (30). The confirmed cases are estimated to have come from 23 countries. Among them, 17 were Korean nationals and 38 were foreigners.
Combining local transmissions and imported cases (excluding quarantine), Seoul reported 569 cases, Gyeonggi 542, and Incheon 95, totaling 1,206 cases in the metropolitan area. The number of deaths increased by 11, bringing the total to 2,276. The domestic average fatality rate is 0.92%. The total number of critically ill patients is 409, which is 18 fewer than the previous day (427).
