'Arrest Obstruction by Railroad Union'... Prosecution Seeks Fines for Former Tongjindang Lawmakers
[Asia Economy Reporter Bae Kyunghwan] The prosecution has requested fines for former Unified Progressive Party lawmakers who were tried for obstructing the police from arresting the union leadership during the 2013 railway union strike.
On the 20th, the prosecution asked the Seoul Central District Court to impose fines of 3 million won during the sentencing hearing for former lawmakers Kim Mihee and Kim Jaeyeon.
The two former lawmakers were issued a summary order for a fine of 3 million won on charges of obstructing special official duties by blocking police entry into the entrance of the Kyunghyang Newspaper building in Jung-gu, Seoul, where the headquarters office of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions was located in December 2013, but they appealed and requested a formal trial.
Former lawmaker Kim Jaeyeon stated in her testimony, "There have been repeated accidents and unfortunate situations due to the police's excessive use of authority, including the Yongsan tragedy," and added, "It is regrettable that the trial continues over actions protesting the police's illegal official duties."
