[Asia Economy Reporter Song Seung-seop] Italy, the chair country of the 2021 G20 Summit, is pushing to hold a special meeting on the Afghanistan situation.
According to local media on the 19th (local time), Prime Minister Mario Draghi is in discussions with leaders of major countries to hold a special meeting related to the Afghanistan situation. He finished a phone call with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson the previous afternoon and plans to have a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the same day.
The G20 includes China, major Western countries, Russia, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey. It is evaluated domestically and internationally as having great strategic value due to its multilateral consultation format.
If the special meeting on Afghanistan is realized, it is highly likely to take place before the summit. This year’s G20 Summit will be held in Rome, Italy, on October 30-31.
