[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Sang-hyun] On the 19th, Gimhae City in Gyeongnam announced that 10 multicultural families' adolescents who immigrated during their youth obtained Barista Level 3 certificates through a technician qualification acquisition course supported by the city.
Youth who immigrated during their youth refers to adolescents who lived abroad and then came to Korea.
The majority are children invited to Korea after international marriages, but this also includes children of overseas Koreans, migrant workers, and refugees.
These adolescents have a high likelihood of settling and living in Korean society, but most current policies focus mainly on Korean language and culture education, so more attention is needed regarding their career education.
According to education statistics released by the Ministry of Education in September last year, there were 597 adolescents who immigrated during their youth in the area, an increase of 159 from 438 the previous year.
Considering that students who do not attend school due to language, cultural, or economic barriers are not included in these statistics, the actual number is expected to be higher.
In fact, a 2016 survey by the Korea Youth Policy Institute of 577 adolescents who immigrated during their youth found that 70% were enrolled in public education, while 30% were not attending school, with the biggest concern being career issues.
To assist them, the city included adolescents who immigrated during their youth in the technician qualification acquisition support project, which until last year only supported marriage immigrant women. As a result, 10 youths obtained Barista Level 3 certificates.
The acquisition cost is supported up to 500,000 KRW per person, and assistance can be obtained by contacting the administrative welfare centers of each eup, myeon, and dong or the Family Support Team of the Women's and Family Division at City Hall.
