Gyeongwon Line Subway, 77% Completion Rate for Dongducheon~Yeoncheon Section... Opening Scheduled for End of Next Year
About 1 hour 40 minutes from Yeoncheon to Yongsan after subway opening
Double track planned for 20.9km between Dongducheon and Yeoncheon, currently single track 추진
[Asia Economy Reporter Ra Young-cheol] The double-track electrification project for the Dongducheon~Yeoncheon section of the Gyeongwon Line, scheduled to open in December next year, is progressing rapidly with a construction rate of 77%.
According to Yeoncheon County on the 20th, the construction of the Dongducheon~Yeoncheon double-track electrification is a railway network development project connecting Seoul and northern Gyeonggi Province.
The 20.9 km Dongducheon~Yeoncheon section is being constructed as a single track designed for future double tracking, considering user demand, with a total project cost of 529.9 billion KRW.
The Gyeongwon Line electric train is designed with 10-car trainsets and a maximum speed of 200 km/h, operating 88 round trips daily between Yongsan and Yeoncheon.
Upon completion of the Gyeongwon Line electrification, the current metropolitan subway, which operates up to Soyosan, will extend to Yeoncheon, and from 2023, it will take about 1 hour and 40 minutes to travel from Yeoncheon to Yongsan.
The county also expects a new beginning opening the "Iron Silk Road era," connecting to the continental railway network such as the Trans-Siberian Railway (TSR) via the North Korean Geumgangsan line and Wonsan, through future projects extending the Yeoncheon~Cheorwon railway and restoring the Baengmagoji~Woljeong-ri section.
Following local residents' requests, the county has agreed with the Korea Rail Network Authority on entrusted projects including the Jeongok bridge construction, with the county bearing 61.1 billion KRW in expenses.
Accordingly, the Korea Rail Network Authority plans to carry out an 820m bridge construction project in Jeongok-eup and improve the level crossing at Ongol underpass to mitigate the disconnection effects in Yeoncheon urban areas. Additionally, a park development project under the Jeongok bridge section will provide convenience facilities for local residents.
The Gyeongwon Line double-track electrification will open after comprehensive test runs and approval of the operation plan by the Korea Railroad Corporation from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.
Kim Kwang-chul, Yeoncheon County Governor, said, "The construction project is being rapidly promoted with the goal of opening by the end of next year, in line with the project’s purpose of promoting regional development through balanced national development.
