Say "Multi-Use Cup" Instead of "Reusable Cup"

"Lemon Market" Replaced with "Information-Imbalanced Market"
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the National Institute of the Korean Language recommended on August 18 that the term "reusable cup" be referred to in Korean as "dahoeyong cup" (multi-use cup). In addition, they suggested replacing the term "lemon market" with the Korean equivalent "jeongbo bulgyunhyeong sijang" (information-imbalanced market).
A reusable cup refers to a cup that looks similar to a disposable paper cup used for takeout, but is made of special materials that allow it to be used semi-permanently. The selection of "dahoeyong cup" was based on a survey. In a public acceptance survey conducted from August 6 to 11 with about 2,000 participants, 94.8% of respondents said the term was appropriate. Additionally, 70.7% of respondents agreed on the need to replace the foreign term with a Korean equivalent.
"Lemon market" is a term used to describe a market situation where, due to information asymmetry, only low-quality goods or services are traded. It refers to a market where only inferior products are distributed, similar to a market filled only with sour, tasteless lemons. At the "Saemalmoim" (New Words Committee) meeting held on August 4, the Ministry and the Institute decided to use "information-imbalanced market" as the Korean replacement term.

The Saemalmoim is a committee that provides easy-to-understand Korean alternatives for difficult foreign neologisms before they become widespread. Experts from various fields-including Korean language, foreign languages, education, public relations and publishing, information and communications, and media-participate in the committee. The Ministry and the Institute plan to continue promoting the use of these replacement terms, encouraging government agencies and media outlets to take the lead in adopting them.
