AWS "Switching to Cloud Reduces Carbon Emissions by 80%"
[Asia Economy Reporter Bu Aeri] It has been claimed that domestic companies and public institutions can reduce carbon emissions by up to 80% when they move their operations from on-premises data centers to cloud infrastructure.
Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced this on the 17th through the results of the survey titled "Carbon Reduction Opportunities through Cloud Migration in the Asia Pacific (APAC) Region," conducted by '451 Research.' The survey targeted over 500 private and public sector organizations in Australia, India, Japan, Singapore, and South Korea, including 100 respondents from South Korea.
The report analyzed that cloud service providers operating with 100% renewable energy in South Korea also achieve higher carbon emission reduction effects. According to the report, if 25% of the 2,400 South Korean companies with more than 250 employees migrate 1 megawatt (MW) of computing workload to the cloud and operate it with renewable energy, it could save the equivalent carbon emissions of 53,000 households for one year.
Cloud data centers were found to improve energy efficiency by using energy-efficient, state-of-the-art servers. The report noted that the average server utilization rate among APAC companies was less than 15%.
Kelly Morgan, Director of Data Center Infrastructure at 451 Research, explained, "Korean companies have been found to expand server infrastructure and adopt the latest server technologies the fastest. However, due to a conservative approach to workload consolidation, the energy efficiency of data center infrastructure remains below average."
