The site, located at 770-9 Majang-dong, had long housed a scrap yard, making it a dusty and noisy place during the day due to machinery sounds, and in the evenings, it became a gathering spot for homeless people, causing residents to avoid passing through.
The district prepared a plan to improve the area into a pleasant and inviting space. Since 2018, the 340.2㎡ site has been designated as an urban planning public facility, and administrative procedures have been steadily carried out to develop it into a community rest area.
Through continuous dialogue and persuasion with the landowners and business operators, compensation for land and business rights was pursued, with the compensation process completed last year. Construction began in March this year, and auxiliary works were finished this month, leading to the official opening.
Opinions raised during last year's residents' briefing session were also reflected. To allow residents to enjoy seasonal beauty, 26 trees of 7 species including the Korean hornbeam and 1,615 shrubs of 10 species such as the butterfly bush were added, along with 2,103 flowering plants of 13 species including cosmos, gaura, and hydrangea.
For safety, CCTV cameras were installed, and exercise equipment was set up alongside benches and shade structures so residents can use the facilities conveniently at any time. The boundaries were designed as green spaces to create a more comfortable and relaxing atmosphere.
Additionally, the curb of the sidewalk was lowered to improve accessibility, and a new crosswalk was installed to ensure safe use.
Mr. Park, a frequent user of the nearby streets, said, “Previously, there were illegally parked cars due to the scrap yard, and the area felt gloomy, but now that the park has been created, the neighborhood feels bright and cheerful. I am very grateful.”
