Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power to Promote Hydrogen Fuel Cell Power Generation Project with POSCO
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Dongguk Lee] Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) is partnering with POSCO to launch the country's first fuel cell power generation project using by-product hydrogen.
On the 12th, KHNP signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with POSCO in KHNP's video conference room for the "Fuel Cell Power Generation Project Utilizing By-product Hydrogen from Steelworks and Activation of Clean Hydrogen."
The signing ceremony was attended by Park Sang-hyung, Head of New Business Division at KHNP, and Yoo Byung-ok, Head of Industrial Gas and Hydrogen Business Division at POSCO, among others.
According to the agreement, the two companies plan to start a preliminary feasibility study for the hydrogen fuel cell power generation project, followed by project development, financial procurement, and EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction).
The power plant will be constructed in Gwangyang, Jeollanam-do, and will produce 318 GWh of electricity through a 40 MW-class hydrogen fuel cell power plant.
KHNP is a power generation company with the best experience in developing and operating fuel cell power plants in Korea, currently operating a total of 150 MW scale fuel cell power plants at multiple bases nationwide.
In addition, the two companies agreed to cooperate on ▲ joint development of hydrogen fuel cell power generation projects utilizing by-product hydrogen from steelworks ▲ hydrogen production and utilization businesses using clean energy ▲ technology development and information exchange to activate the clean hydrogen industry ▲ overseas clean hydrogen project development and demonstration, among others.
Park Sang-hyung, Head of New Business Division at KHNP, said, "The fuel cell power generation project using by-product hydrogen from steelworks, the first of its kind in Korea, is a good business model for realizing the national carbon neutrality policy," adding, "KHNP, the largest power generation company in Korea, and POSCO, a steel company, will cooperate to create synergy in various hydrogen-related energy convergence projects domestically and internationally and strive to secure sustainable growth engines for the companies."
