Metaverse is a compound word of meta, meaning virtual or abstract, and universe, meaning the real world, referring to a three-dimensional virtual world where social, economic, and cultural activities similar to the real world take place.
At the launching ceremony, 132 supporters of the 15th term, including Park Jae-hyun, president of Korea Water Resources Corporation, participated by creating their own avatars in the metaverse world. A K-water official explained, "This event was organized to provide participants, who are 'Generation Z' supporters, with an opportunity to experience innovative technologies in line with the digital transformation era and to strengthen interactive communication by utilizing the metaverse," adding, "This is the first attempt by a public enterprise to hold a launching ceremony using the metaverse."
K-water’s representative public communication program, the K-water University Student Supporters, started with the 1st term in 2007 and has now reached its 15th term. So far, a total of about 2,500 university students nationwide have participated to raise awareness about the importance of water and the environment.
The 15th term supporters were recruited from June 17 to July 6 by four river basins: Han River, Geum River, Yeongseom, and Nakdong River, targeting domestic university students interested in K-water and water management. A total of 364 applicants applied, and after the first and second rounds of selection, 33 teams consisting of 132 members were finally selected. Until December this year, they will carry out various mission activities such as producing online content including UCC and card news on monthly themes like ▲water management projects for public water welfare ▲green transition including ESG (environment, social, governance) management ▲water-saving practices ▲creation of social value, and communicate with the public through SNS. All teams completing the supporter activities will receive a certificate of completion signed by the president of K-water, and outstanding teams will be awarded scholarships and prizes.
