US White House National Security Advisor Requests Brazil to Exclude Huawei from 5G Projects
At Meeting with Brazilian President, "Huawei Risk"
Indicates Continuation of Huawei Sanctions Following Trump Administration
[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunwoo Lee] Jake Sullivan, the U.S. White House National Security Advisor, recently requested Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro to exclude the Chinese Huawei Group from Brazil's 5th generation mobile communication (5G) projects during their meeting. This is interpreted as a sign that the Biden administration will continue sanctions against Huawei, following the previous Donald Trump administration.
On the 9th (local time), Juan Gonzalez, Senior Director for the Western Hemisphere at the White House National Security Council (NSC), stated at a press briefing that "During Sullivan's visit to Brazil last week, he met with President Bolsonaro and expressed concerns about the potential risks if Huawei participates in Brazil's 5G infrastructure projects."
This marks the first time since Biden took office that the White House National Security Advisor mentioned the risks of Huawei during a visit to a South American country. The Hong Kong South China Morning Post (SCMP) pointed out that "Following the previous Trump administration, the Biden administration has also expressed its intention to continue sanctions against Huawei." Earlier, the U.S. Embassy in Brazil also stated last week that the U.S. has "strong concerns" regarding Huawei's possible participation in Brazil's 5G projects.

Previously, during the Trump administration in 2019, the U.S. government urged its allies not to use Huawei's telecommunications equipment in 5G projects for security reasons. Since May 2019, the U.S. has also implemented regulations requiring domestic companies to obtain permission before supplying parts to Huawei for security reasons. Since May of last year, these regulations have been strengthened to require foreign companies producing parts using U.S. equipment to also obtain U.S. government approval when supplying parts to Huawei, just like American companies.
