Gokseong-gun Challenges Cultivation of Cheonhyehyang

[Gokseong=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Heo Seonsik] Jeonnam Gokseong-gun (Governor Yoo Geun-gi) announced that on the 22nd, it conducted theoretical education on Cheonhyehyang cultivation techniques and on-site consulting for farmers involved in the high-quality Cheonhyehyang specialized complex project.

For practical and effective education, Gokseong-gun invited an agricultural meister from Jeju Special Self-Governing Province. Trainees were able to receive professional and detailed education on the characteristics of the Cheonhyehyang variety, soil fertilization methods, and more.

After the theoretical education, practical training was conducted by visiting Cheonhyehyang cultivation sites within Gokseong-gun, covering branch training methods and new shoot management techniques.

Gokseong-gun was selected for the 2019 Regional Vitalization Crop Base Creation Fruit Tree Sector contest project and established a 0.7ha Cheonhyehyang cultivation complex last year, with an additional 0.7ha planned for this year.

Jeju Island is famous as the main production area for Cheonhyehyang, but due to climate change, the possibility of cultivation in southern regions is increasing, leading to its introduction as a new income crop.

So far, three farms have challenged Cheonhyehyang cultivation, and with three more farms added this year, a total of six farms are participating in Cheonhyehyang cultivation.

According to a county official, Cheonhyehyang, which began cultivation in 2020, is expected to be harvestable in spring 2024. Farmer A, who participated in the education, said, “In inland areas, experience and information on Cheonhyehyang cultivation are lacking, making it difficult to grow.

Through this education, I was able to learn practical information and know-how needed in the field.” Gokseong-gun plans to expand the cultivation area and strengthen support so that Cheonhyehyang can establish itself as a new high-income crop.
