This is to ensure that the candidates' pledge competitions do not become disorganized and scattered.
After the joint meeting, Lee Jun-seok, leader of the People Power Party, said, "(The senior lawmakers) gave several good suggestions regarding the fair management of the presidential primary," adding, "There was a call to strengthen the party's policy functions." During the public remarks at the joint meeting, Hong Moon-pyo, a People Power Party lawmaker, said, "If candidates compete individually, the party's very existence becomes a joke," and added, "We need to quickly establish a basic framework to manage candidates through organization and systems and move forward together." This means creating the basic policy direction of the party while preparing areas where candidates can compete with their pledges.
Previously, the People Power Party faced controversy as presidential candidates expressed conflicting views on the abolition or continuation of the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family. Some candidates, including Jeju Governor Won Hee-ryong, have intensified their attacks on the abolition of the ministry, calling it 'divisive populism.' Lee Myung-soo, a People Power Party lawmaker, also pointed out, "The ruling and opposition parties are generally heading toward a negative election campaign," and emphasized, "It is necessary for the party to provide practical support at the party level regarding candidates' vision presentations and policy proposals."
