Governor Kim: "Regional Extinction and Metropolitan Overcrowding, If Left As Is, Will Hinder National Competitiveness"
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Saeyan] Kim Kyung-soo, Governor of Gyeongnam Province, emphasized that "the promotion of the Mega City is not just a regional issue but is absolutely necessary for national competitiveness."
Governor Kim made this remark on the 20th at the '2021 Yeongnam Future Forum ? Yeongnam Region Grand Integration, as the Center of the Republic of Korea,' raising concerns about the overpopulation in the metropolitan area.
The forum, hosted by Kukmin Ilbo, was attended by Governor Kim, the five governors of the Yeongnam region, Kim Sa-yeol, Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Balanced National Development, and Byun Jae-woon, President of Kukmin Ilbo, among others.
In response to Chairman Kim Sa-yeol's question about the future vision of Gyeongnam and the Yeongnam region, where young people can live well, Governor Kim began by saying, "A region that loses its youth cannot be sustainable."
He continued, "Especially, the difference in metropolitan public transportation infrastructure centered on subways and circular rail networks further polarizes job opportunities that can be chosen and supported."
He explained that in non-metropolitan areas lacking metropolitan public transportation infrastructure, jobs become opportunities that require moving to those areas.
He added, "Local companies, universities, research institutes, and local governments are joining forces to directly nurture the talent needed by companies within the region and link them to jobs," and said, "Along with the regional talent innovation platform, we will rapidly increase jobs preferred by young people through the smartization of manufacturing and attracting content companies."
After the forum, the five governors held the '2nd Yeongnam Region Future Development Council' to discuss common issues in the Yeongnam region.
