Hampyeong-gun Begins Removal of Sophora Trees Infected with Leaf Blight in Hampyeong-eup Urban Area
Scheduled for completion this month... Preparing for August typhoon
[Hampyeong=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Chunsu] Hampyeong-gun, Jeollanam-do announced on the 20th that it will remove 139 Sophora trees infected with rust disease in the Hampyeong-eup area by the end of this month and replace them with other tree species within this year.
This project covers the section from Hampyeong County Office to Hampyeong County Forestry Cooperative to Hampyeong Hakdari High School. The Sophora trees infected with rust disease not only spoil the road scenery but also pose a high risk of causing major accidents by toppling during natural disasters such as typhoons, potentially causing significant damage to lives and houses.
Rust disease is a viral infection that causes gall formations on branches and trunks, leading to cracks. It is known that once a Sophora tree is infected, there is no special treatment other than removal.
In fact, last August, some street trees fell and covered the road due to a sudden heavy rain accompanied by strong winds, causing significant damage.
Additionally, the dense branches block store signs and frequent complaints have been raised due to fallen leaves. The street trees occupying narrow sidewalks cause inconvenience for pedestrians, and vigorous root growth has caused problems such as lifting of pavement blocks.
