A young entrepreneur encouraged his juniors to take on challenges and donated 10 million won to his alma mater’s development fund. He challenged himself with a global startup and also attempted to enroll in the newly established university.
Regarding the ‘donation,’ which he said gives the value of experience and achievement, he described it as sowing the seeds of challenge.
Jang Dong-hyun, a young entrepreneur and alumnus of Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST), donated 10 million won to his alma mater’s development fund.
He decided to share the achievements he made at the startup he challenged with his alma mater. The donation ceremony for alumnus Jang Dong-hyun was held at the university headquarters at 2 p.m. on the 9th.
Mr. Jang enrolled as part of the first undergraduate class when UNIST opened in 2009.
He majored in the Department of Design and Human Engineering. In 2012, he served as the second student council president of UNIST. He first stepped into the startup field by founding a social venture in 2016.
While engaging in various entrepreneurial activities, he moved his challenge to a new stage in India in 2017.
He joined ‘Rimese,’ a startup introducing K-beauty to the Indian MZ generation, as an early member. He was in charge of operations at the Korean headquarters, handling organization building, business planning, and various other tasks to grow the company.
Rimese secured 1 billion won in seed investment from Kakao Ventures in 2018. In 2019, it was selected for the accelerating program of the global skincare company ‘Beiersdorf,’ gaining attention as a next-generation K-beauty startup.
Mr. Jang proudly said, “My experiences at UNIST played a big role in allowing me to challenge the unfamiliar startup field and achieve even small successes.”
He added, “I decided to donate because I hope more people passing through UNIST can share such experiences.”
Mr. Jang recently succeeded in recovering investments from his business in India and returned to Korea. Before preparing a new business, the first place he visited was his alma mater.
This was to share his achievements with the school and to complete his unfinished studies. Having left the school in 2019 after his leave of absence expired, he plans to resume his studies by re-enrolling starting from the upcoming second semester.
He said, “When I first started my business, I had a hard time because there were no seniors, but recently I often hear stories about good friends from UNIST.”
“I hope this development fund becomes a small seed that helps UNIST juniors turn their eyes to the world.”
