UN "Sharp Decline in Birth Rates in Europe and the US Due to COVID-19 Impact"
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Jung-yoon] A study has found that birth rates in Europe and the United States have sharply declined due to the impact of COVID-19.
According to dpa news agency on the 10th (local time), a United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) survey revealed that the number of newborns significantly decreased in some parts of Europe and the United States due to the effects of COVID-19.
Analysis of data from 19 European countries and the United States showed that birth rates dropped considerably after October 2020 compared to previous periods. Among them, in 15 European Union (EU) countries, the number of newborns in October last year decreased by 3% compared to the same period the previous year, 5% in November, and 8.1% in December.

The UNFPA stated, "Considering the nine-month pregnancy period, short-term changes in birth rates are not clear," but added, "However, the decline in birth rates due to the COVID-19 pandemic is becoming increasingly evident." UNFPA plans to release these research findings on the upcoming World Population Day, June 11.
