The Arts Academy Award Winners Selected: Kim Won-woo, Song Young-sook, Lee Sang-man, Jeon Jo-myeong
The National Academy of Arts of the Republic of Korea announced on the 9th that it has elected Professor Emeritus Kwon Young-min of Seoul National University, Director Lee Kyu-do of the National Opera Company, Professor Emeritus Lee Man-bang of Sookmyung Women's University, and former Seoul National University Professor Kim Woo-jin as new members. They were finally approved at the regular general meeting held that day, following recommendations from Academy members and over 230 arts institutions and organizations. With this, the number of Academy members has increased to ninety-one.
Professor Kwon Young-min is a literary critic. He has authored twenty-eight books, including Korean Modern Literature and the Spirit of the Times (1983). He served as Dean of the College of Humanities at Seoul National University, Director of the Korean Language and Literature Globalization Education Research Group, President of the International Comparative Korean Studies Association, and President of the Korean Modern Literature Association, and worked as the editor-in-chief of the monthly magazine Literary Thought.
Director Lee Kyu-do of the National Opera Company is a music educator who completed the Maria Callas Master Class. He has served as a professor at the College of Music at Ewha Womans University, Michigan State University, and Sungshin Women's University. After serving as a director of the Seoul Symphony Orchestra, he currently holds positions as director of the National Opera Company, leader of the Prima Donna Ensemble, and distinguished professor at Seoul Cyber University.
Professor Emeritus Lee Man-bang of Sookmyung Women's University graduated from the Composition Department of the Freiburg National University of Music in Germany. In the 1980s, he gained fame performing string trios such as 樂 on European stages. From 1983 to 2011, he served as a professor of composition and dean of the College of Music at Sookmyung Women's University. He has also served as the general director of Saemadang Music, a specialist committee member of the 2002 Korea-Japan World Cup Organizing Committee, and an operations committee member for the Music category of the Arts of the Year Award.
Former Seoul National University Professor Kim Woo-jin is a holder of the national intangible cultural asset Han Gap-deuk style Geomungo Sanjo. He has been a member of the Seoul Municipal Gugak Orchestra, professor in the Department of Korean Traditional Music at Chonnam National University College of Arts, professor at the Graduate School of Korean Studies at the Academy of Korean Studies, cultural heritage committee member of Gyeonggi Province, specialist committee member of the National Cultural Heritage Committee, professor in the Department of Korean Traditional Music at Dankook University College of Music, and professor in the Department of Korean Traditional Music at Seoul National University College of Music. He currently serves as an advisor to the Korean Traditional Music Society.

Meanwhile, at the general meeting held that day, the Academy selected literary writer Kim Won-woo, Director Song Young-sook of the Gahyeon Cultural Foundation, music critic Lee Sang-man, and cinematographer Jeon Jo-myeong as recipients of this year’s Academy Awards. The prize money is 100 million won.
