30 Selected Over 3 Years...Enhancing Expertise
Total 2,785 Recruits Including Second Half Patrol Officer Open Recruitment
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Gwan-joo] The police, who will take over the counterintelligence investigation authority in 2024, are hiring experts in "security investigations." The police plan to select 30 people over the next three years to ensure a smooth transition of the counterintelligence investigation authority.
The National Police Agency has decided to hire 10 security investigation specialists as sergeants and will announce the "Second Half Police Officer Career Competitive Recruitment Examination (Career Recruitment)" on the 9th. The recruitment fields include 4 positions in international security, 3 in counter-espionage and counter-terrorism, and 3 in economic security. Candidates must have obtained a master's degree or higher in a related major from domestic or foreign universities, or have at least two years of work experience in the related field with a bachelor's degree or higher. Following the passage of the revised National Intelligence Service Act in the National Assembly plenary session last December, which transfers the counterintelligence investigation authority from the National Intelligence Service to the police, the authority will be fully transferred to the police in 2024.
Accordingly, the National Police Agency's National Investigation Headquarters (Guksubon), launched in January this year, has established a Security Investigation Bureau under it, reorganizing the structure to include security planning and management, investigation command, crime analysis, and even direct investigation departments. Additionally, a "NIS-Police Consultative Body" has been formed, and regular cooperation and consultations are ongoing to ensure a smooth transfer of the counterintelligence investigation authority.
However, as the National Investigation Headquarters gains the counterintelligence investigation authority following the adjustment of prosecution and police investigation rights, concerns persist that while the authority is expanding excessively, there is a lack of expertise. The police plan to dispel such concerns and secure investigative expertise by hiring a total of 30 security investigation experts, 10 each year until 2023.

In this police career recruitment, "Intelligent Crime Investigation Officers" will also be selected to strengthen expertise in economic crime investigations. The recruitment fields include three areas: certified public accounting, tax accounting, and law, with a total of 55 positions. This is analyzed as an effort to secure expertise in economic and financial crimes following the adjustment of investigation rights. Other fields such as abuse prevention (25 people), cyber investigation (130 people), and on-site forensic personnel (25 people) will also be recruited. The total scale of police officer recruitment in the second half of this year is 2,248 for the open competitive exam for patrol officers and 537 for career recruitment, totaling 2,785. After written exams, physical tests, and other selection processes, successful candidates will be announced on December 17.
