Police Crack Down on Disorderly Conduct at Major Seoul Tourist Attractions Ahead of 'Travel Bubble' Launch
278 Cases of Illegal Waste Dumping Detected Over 2 Weeks
143 Cases of Personal Mobility Device Regulation Violations
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Gwan-joo] The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency announced on the 6th that it conducted crackdowns on violations of basic order in major tourist areas of Seoul ahead of the implementation of the 'Travel Bubble (Safe Travel Zone),' which allows tourism between countries with excellent COVID-19 quarantine measures.
During the two-week crackdown from the 21st of last month to the 4th of this month, a total of 278 violations were detected, including 58 cases of violations of the Minor Offenses Act, 143 cases of violations of the Road Traffic Act, and 67 cases of violations of the Public Health Control Act.
The police especially carried out crackdowns in major tourist spots in Seoul where the number of tourists has increased compared to the previous year (March to May), such as Myeongdong, Insadong, Hongdae, Hangang Park, and Namsan Tower, based on tourism big data analysis.
The main targets of the crackdown were acts causing inconvenience to citizens in tourist areas, such as littering and jaywalking, as well as recent safety risks related to personal mobility devices (PM), including electric kickboards, where safety gear was not worn.
Among violations related to personal mobility devices, not wearing helmets was the most frequent with 110 cases, followed by 14 cases of signal violations, 12 cases of unlicensed driving, and 7 cases of exceeding passenger capacity.

A representative of the Seoul Tourism Police Unit stated, "As the popularity and number of personal mobility devices increase, the risk of safety accidents in tourist areas is expected to rise. Therefore, crackdowns on these violations will continue throughout the year." He added, "With the promotion of the Travel Bubble, the number of foreign tourists visiting Korea is expected to gradually increase, so we will do our best to create a safe security environment where tourists can feel at ease."
