Yongin City Submits Petition for Lee Kun-hee Art Museum Hosting... 20,000 Citizens Sign
[Asia Economy (Yongin) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Yongin City in Gyeonggi Province has officially requested the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to establish the 'Lee Kun-hee Art Museum.'
On the 5th, Yongin Mayor Baek Gun-gi visited the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and delivered a petition expressing the hope to attract the Lee Kun-hee Art Museum to Yongin, along with a signature list reflecting the citizens' wishes.
The petition included reasons why the city should attract the Lee Kun-hee Art Museum and the strengths the city possesses.
The city cited as reasons for attraction that, together with the Hoam Art Museum, which houses the collection of the late Chairman Lee Byung-chul, it is possible to have a one-stop viewing of the Samsung family collection, and that there are many prominent tourist attractions such as Everland and the Korean Folk Village, attracting more than 10 million domestic and international tourists annually, making it possible to form a tourism cluster linked with the Lee Kun-hee Art Museum in the future.
Additionally, Yongin emphasized its strength as a transportation hub located in the southern metropolitan area and its large area, which allows for various site uses according to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism's construction direction.
The signature list was prepared through a citywide signature campaign conducted by the 'Lee Kun-hee Art Museum Yongin Attraction Citizens' Promotion Committee,' launched in May, from the 5th of last month to the 4th of this month. The signature list contains signatures from about 20,000 citizens.
Mayor Baek said, "Yongin is the optimal location for the establishment of the Lee Kun-hee Art Museum. The city, citizens, and local organizations are working together to do their best to attract the Lee Kun-hee Art Museum," adding, "We will make every effort to build the Lee Kun-hee Art Museum. Please cooperate so that the Lee Kun-hee Art Museum can definitely be established in Yongin."
