The Daejeon City government announced on the 30th that the Hongdo Underpass, which was temporarily opened last February, will be fully opened starting from the 1st of next month.
The Hongdo Underpass project, which began construction in May 2017, involved demolishing the existing pedestrian overpass and constructing an underground 8-lane road over a 1.0 km section, including 6 main lanes and 2 ramp lanes. The city temporarily opened 4 lanes for two-way traffic in February this year and added 2 more lanes for two-way traffic in May. The total project cost amounted to 97.1 billion KRW.
The city expects that with the full opening of the Hongdo Underpass, more than 60,000 vehicles will pass through this section daily. It is also anticipated to alleviate traffic congestion around Dongseo-daero and improve traffic connectivity between the eastern and western regions.
