FKI Hosts Dinner Meeting Inviting Former US Congress Members Visiting Korea
[Asia Economy Reporter Su-yeon Woo] On the 29th, the Federation of Korean Industries (FKI) held a dinner meeting with former U.S. congressmen and businesspeople who visited Korea after the inauguration of the Biden administration, conveying suggestions for economic cooperation between Korea and the United States.
The meeting was attended by former U.S. congressmen visiting Korea and representatives from major domestic companies such as Korean Air, Kolon, Poongsan, Hanwha Life, Hyosung, and CJ Logistics.
The visiting delegation consisted of former House member Bob Goodlatte, former Senator Doug Jones, former House members Mike Bishop, John Faso, Bart Gordon, Brian Baird, Kim Chang-joon, Chairman of the Mirae Korea-US Foundation (the first Korean-American member of the U.S. House of Representatives), and Pete Weicklin, Chairman of the Former Members of Congress (FMC).
The FMC, to which they belong, is a bipartisan organization composed of more than 800 former Republican and Democratic members of the U.S. Congress, serving as a key channel of communication with the U.S. Congress and is expected to play an important role in conveying the positions of Korean companies to the U.S. Congress.
Kwon Tae-shin, Vice Chairman of the FKI, requested the former congressmen visiting Korea to “serve as a bridge so that when various areas of cooperation prepared through the Korea-U.S. summit in May materialize, many opportunities for participation will open up for Korean companies,” and also mentioned, “We hope that the discussions on the amendment of Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act, which has caused concern for Korean companies in recent years, will proceed well and yield good results soon.”

Kim Bong-man, Director of International Cooperation at the FKI, expressed expectations, saying, “In a situation where direct communication between our companies and current U.S. congressmen is difficult, the visiting former congressmen delegation can convey Korea’s position to the U.S. through their networks in Washington.”
